A recent question that I keep asking myself each minute of the hour long cross races, is cycle cross harder than mountain biking?
I would have to say that per minute expenditures I will hurt more in cross, however, in the total race distance mountain biking in general is equally as hard due to the longer time of each race, or at least for me. The difference is cold muddy conditions of cross. Vs the extreme heat and climbing of mountain biking. In the end the best cross racers are those people with the power of a tank, and their off-road capabilities. In the words of Owen Wood “cross is just hard”, its not as tiring as mountain biking, but you will hurt more in cross, especially after the race for about a good 3…hundred days. In mountain biking I don’t hurt as much, but recovery times are spent more on replenishing those calories and resting your lungs, cross is more resting your legs, joints, wounds, back, and moral.
